We are grateful to have been nominated by the Dovercourt Recreation Centre and accept this award on behalf of the many small businesses who give back to their communities every day.
We’ve been partners with Dovercourt for more than 20 years, and what a fruitful partnership it is! In early 1996, Patrick approached John Rapp, the Executive Director and inspirational leader at Dovercourt, and asked him what the Morris Home Team could do to help with any of Dovercourt’s programs. They discussed many ideas at that first meeting. John suggested we start with sponsoring a strawberry social as part of his seniors’ program. That was the start of a wonderful relationship. Our Dovercourt participation and sponsorship blossomed from that first strawberry social.
Here’s a quick economics lesson – did you know that more than 97 per cent of Canada’s 1.2 million enterprises are small businesses? This category– where a company has from 1 to 100 people--employs 8.2 million Canadians. That’s almost 71 per cent of the entire private sector workforce.
But small businesses aren’t just about economics – far from it. They’re about community. From the restaurant owner who provides food to the local festival, to the photographer who donates her services to the local newspaper, to the shop owner who gives uniforms to the local little league, these are the people who foster community spirit.
So many small business owners aren’t in the public eye. While it is wonderful to get a moment in the sun, we would like to shine a light on the many unheralded and selfless business owners who do so much every day. This award is as much for them as it is for us. On behalf of everyone at the Morris Home Team, we gratefully accept this award on behalf of so many small businesses who give back to their communities every day.
